General Description and Program Goals
The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree is a two year program that provides in-depth course work for those who wish to be equipped with counseling competence needed to assist Christian individuals and families both in and out of the local church context. The degree program requires 47 semester credits. As many as 23 semester credits of graduate work may be transferred from another institution. It is a non-licensure program, which is not designed to fulfill the California state requirements for licensure.
The goals of the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program are to:
- To prepare students for counseling ministries.
Learning Outcome:
Upon completing this degree, students will be able to:
- Integrate Bible/theology and counseling/ psychology;
- Demonstrate personal and spiritual maturity as a care giving professional;
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of counseling theories in specific area(s);
- Demonstrate competence and practical skills for counseling and its related services;
- Demonstrate their understanding and competence of counseling as ministry.
Prerequisites
Students who do not have a BA in psychology or (Christian) counseling must take 6 credits of BA-level prerequisite course. The following course is required:
LA102 Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)
CC412 Counseling Theory and Techniques (3 credits)
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program the student is required to have completed a minimum of 47 semester credits with a 2.5 GPA or above. At least 24 credits must be completed at World Mission University. Students must demonstrate competence of at least average level on the Student Training Evaluation Form.
Thesis
Students can choose to write a thesis if they want. When they write a thesis, it will be submitted and approved by the graduation committee. The student will register for the course PT604 thesis during the final fall semester of the program and submit a prospectus and outline of the project for faculty approval in advance. The school will assign an advisor according to the topic of the thesis. The length of the project will be approximately 50 pages of the text, double-spaced. The project must meet the writing standards of WMU.
If students choose not to write a thesis, they must take ministry project or a counseling course instead.

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology requires 47 semester credits of course work comprised of 9 credits of Biblical/Theological studies, 3 credits of Practical Ministry Studies, 24 credits of Professional studies, and 11 credits of field education.
